GarageBand: How to Be Creative
Here are 5 creative ways you can use the recording software on your computer (such as GarageBand, or Pro Tools, or Logic, or whatever) as an instrument itself. I used GarageBand to record and mix all the music in this video, but any modern software will be able to do some version of the stuff I talk about here. Affiliate links below. Stop motion animation by John Marty.

I use delay in everything I do in life other than gratification.
man thisss iss soooo f good! \m/
🥊♥
i've had this pedal for two years and you explained it in a way i could never in less than 8 minutes. where have you been sir? great stuff
Great video, I'm gonna go play GTA 3 now
I like that your profile picture on Spotify is the same like in your channel here. So convenient
it's all one thing
"This is the last time we're gonna talk about sonding realistic" = immediate subsctiption.
Your way of storytelling is kinda hot 🔥
Wow! Your channel is gold! Just watched some videos and my synapses are already crackling in that feel I need for getting lost in creativity 👾👾👾🫶🏻thank u so much. And the animation clips are awesome btw
Was that one Elliot Smith?
bro, you’re creativity so inspiring every pedal has some secrets and I love how you dial it in and exploit those totally unique amazing tones. Also that BC Rich is sick. Keep going man.
I got this pedal last night week and it’s the first to knock my socks off in some time
If you want to hear a great use of the ring mod, check out Wayne Krantz, Keith Carlock, and Tim LeFebreve at the Iridium. At one point, Krantz scats while grooving with the most obnoxious ring mod sound.
Krantz understands ring mod on a deep level. Also if you're into Lefebvre you'll get a kick out of these pedal vids he and I did together: ua-cam.com/play/PLzaV6dQDtY1-BC4m8VaLrLjVqcm_4cJL9.html
Now I just listen for the cover songs
you might get a kick out of this if you haven't seen it before: bit.ly/3vZ0yft
What the!?!? If the 80's had a Mayor. This guy would be it. So twisted and unique! By the end i found i was wearing my underwear over top of my pants.
This is awesome. Will the duophony also do a regular old series signal path?
Yes mike, it will. But know it will only do series mode loop A to loop B and not the other way around. You need to ask yourself why in all of gods green hydroponic grow op would you want it to go the other way? Bounce loops back and forth maybe?? You're gonna be ok.
Hey man! I’ve been absolutely binging the videos on your channel for the past couple of days and you have completely helped me learn more about guitar pedals and music in general. Do you have any tips on how to make controlled feedback? I recently bought the digitech freqout and to be honest I’m kind of disappointed with it. Thanks man!
Hey thanks for the comment. Pro-tip #3 in this video is a controlled feedback thing: ua-cam.com/video/UO6mtqESIyo/v-deo.html
Pro tip 5 is right clever. I have a Boss CH-1 Super Chorus pedal but haven't given much though to it's stereo function, because of the wet effect, but using it a a clean stereo output everything before is very intriguing. In
Sick jam
Having a blast with my SL-2 but looking for advice. When I TAP TEMPO into it (via midi), with quarter note taps, the resulting Slicer tempo seems to come in 8th notes (or 16ths). Anyone know if this can be subdivided?
i myself don't know how to do it on the Slicer end, but my guess is that most thing sthat send out MIDI clock info would let you tweak the subdivision on that end
Would love to see you tackle the Tera Echo
I got an SL-2 a few months back because of this video. Had never heard of it until then. It's an awesome effect. I don't even need to feel particularly inspired at the moment I start using it because something about it just induces creativity.
I feel the same
I didn't realize Rick Rubin had asked you to write the next chapter for The Creative Act
nor did i
My jaw very much dropped when you played your synthesizer lead guitar.
i got a little bored and remastered this song.. i made a video but i dont want to upset you by posting it ua-cam.com/video/o_NmwRcXES0/v-deo.html i'll take it down if its an issue
all good thanks dude
There aren't very many channels I watch just for the vibe, but this is for sure is it 👍
Z-Vex did not create the lo-fi pedal. Have you ever played through an Ibanez Lo-Fi pedal made in the late 1990's? I love that pedal and I'm very sad it's discontinued. I wish they would make a mini-version so I can put on my touring pedal board!
I have an unusual setup, jazzmaster with flatwound strings tuned to C standard, 2 dynasonic pickups with 500k pots with treble bleed. I run the volume at 7 for almost clean, and 10 for fuzz. First in chain is MXR Classic 108 Fuzz into EHX Eddy vibrato set to a subtle warble into a tremolo that's on but dialed back into an MXR phase 90 that's on once to twice in a set into an MXR Carbon Copy mini that's set to a gnarly reverb like tone into a Tech 21 Liverpool pedal with the character knob up and the gain down (almost like a tiny champ acting up) into an SP Compressor to even out the fuzz and clean volumes. All that into a neutral Fender Rumble 100 amp. I love my rig! I'm on tour across the US for a two-year stretch!
All these covers really got to me
How do u do that pixel effect on the video? When ur holding the mic
It's the same software I talk about using here: ua-cam.com/video/TAiU4wfVgLI/v-deo.html
Thanks dude :-D
I feel like this is exactly the sort of stuff i'd love to see more off, right up my alley. How about how to record?
thy will be done: ua-cam.com/video/Mpc9tCnP7Bo/v-deo.html
When I was eighteen I was doing coursework for my music a level (UK) and rather than work on my composition I would just muck about with all the GarageBand sounds and my electric guitar as I didn’t have a mac or interface at home lol
Ok, if all the videos ive come across, yours was right to the point, concise and so very helpful. After retireing ing the Philippines, I realized i had a perform vk that could be my interface to my wife's Mac Pro. So i started tinkering with GB. Trial and error and consulting UA-camr videos like yours got me up and running. You did so much in so little time! Your playing is amazing! Im a keyboard player who loves guitar even more. If you could help with how you get the mix to sound so clear. I go from good to bad audio wise on certain songs. Do know what happens from one to another. Thank you for your channel!
thanks for the comment. my mixes have some issues, but I think the best thing I'm doing mix-wise is picking sounds that will combine well in the first place. for instance i already know what drum machine I like, so I start there, and then I don't record a guitar part unless the guitar sound already sounds good against the drum machine. that way i don't really have to EQ or tweak it very much later. and the fact that I crank out so many of these helps because I already have some sense of what my go-to sounds are and how they're going to interact
This is one of the most unique, interesting and coolest guitar channels on UA-cam. Nobody really does it quite the way you do
Sounded like you were playing Remember the Time from Michael Jackson, idk if you were but that first example was lovely
That was on purpose, love MJ and I'm glad you caught that
Thank you for opening my eyes to the possibilities of GarageBand
I like this, but i love this ua-cam.com/video/LS1SHv4FAKg/v-deo.htmlsi=r8DhYJgRoT0VwnIS&t=303
Nice Cheap Trick!!! Sweeet!
The octave wurlitzer sound example sounds great. Can’t wait for the full track
thanks dude
Dude this song is beautiful, especially that verse melody. fucking catchy and flows perfectly. Glad I finally checked out your music after seeing so many of the videos and watching the AMA’s. This is fucking awesome man. For sure giving the albums a listen at work tomorrow!Sending hate from south Texas
Seriously this is inspiring me to really work on the demos I have and just be creative. I gotta make some more videos and start singing man FUCK THANK YOU
@@kdennis2427 go for it dude
So helpful, as are all your vids!
Bro lets Dropbox some acid and jam together
Dude, so proud of you doing your thing like this. Playing and tones are amazing.
That funky fuzz guitar solo was RIDICULOUS... so good
Dude the song is genuinely good lol
Thanks, a version of it is gonna be on my next record, song will be called DEAD SERIOUS
Love your content man. Definitely the coolest guy on UA-cam.
Wow! From Space Cadet to Space Yngwie! Sick chops man!
This was awesome man. Thanks for all the great stuff you share here.
Fascinating stuff. Thank you!
I saw that fuzz solo on your short and had to look up the plasma pedal and the dude doing the demo just didn’t do it justice like you did lol
thanks. one of the first pedal vids I ever made was about the Plasma, it was the early days: ua-cam.com/video/L1V3NtLzzGw/v-deo.html
Really dig that slowed down drum beat and the Plasma guitar solo!!!! I'm an older guy who has never used any DAW and have only used a desk top computer running Windows 7. Someone gave me a Mac Pro computer, so I'm curious if I'll be able to learn how to use it. I have a Presonus Audiobox 44VSL interface. Is it asking my brain too much to learn Garageband and MAC this late in life? (Where have all those brain cells gone?) Turning 64 in September. It didn't take as long as i thought to get this old! HA!
I believe in you, it'll be great
@@CyberattackWorld Thanks. It gives me some hope. You're probably too young to remember Shawn Phillips, but he gave me the computer. He's hiring me to go on the road to help with the Canadian part of his summer tour this August. At 81 he's still going strong. Bill Graham called him "the best kept secret in the music business". With 28 albums recorded it's hard to "pigeon-hole" his style. If you're up to it, check out some of his music. There's a lot to choose from. Thanks again... I'll hit the subscribe & like buttons.
